Root canal treatment, also known as endodontics, is the process of removing the pulp tissue of the infected tooth due to reasons such as bruises and fractures, disinfecting it and filling it with canal filling materials. The pulp is located in the innermost part of the tooth which contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. With root canal treatment, these nerves are reached and the dead layer is removed. Root canal treatment is applied in cases where the tooth is damaged so much that it cannot heal. The aim of root canal treatment is to save the dead tooth, not to lose the bone structure of the tooth and to make the tooth functional again. It is a process that usually takes two sessions. In the first session, the pulp part of the tooth is removed, the root canals are reshaped and disinfected. Root canals are filled with special canal filling materials. The tooth cavity is closed with a temporary filling and the tooth is expected to heal for 4-5 days. In the second session, temporary filling is removed and permanent filling is performed.
