Breast reconstruction is done in cases where parts or all of the breast is removed during the treatment of cancer. Generally, two different methods are used in breast reconstruction. The first method of breast reconstruction is done using the patient’s own tissues. The second method of breast reconstruction is done using breast implants and tissue expanders. The tissue that is used for the breast reconstruction can come from the abdominal region, back region, buttocks, inguinal region and other similar regions. Tissue expanders or implants are used for patients who do not have sufficient tissue remaining in the breasts after the cancer operation or whose own tissue is not suitable for this procedure. 3-6 months after the cancer treatment is done, a new nipple is made for the patients whose nipple weren’t preserved at the cancer operation. The asymmetries between the 2 breasts are corrected as well.
