Surgical extraction is a technique used to remove some problems that cannot be seen easily in the mouth, such broken or impacted teeth at the gingival margin. Local anesthesia is used in surgical teeth extractions the same as in simple teeth extractions. To reach the tooth, the gum is opened with a small incision and the bone on the tooth is removed with special tools and then the tooth is extracted. After extraction, the gingiva is closed with stitches. There may be swelling and bruising in the chin after surgical extractions. Applying ice to that area for around 24 hours after extraction will reduce the swelling.
