The teeth, which are commonly called wisdom teeth, are the molars located in the lower and upper jaw at the very back. Usually, teeth erupting for people who are in their 20s cause pain and abscess formation in many because they cannot adapt to the jaw structure. The pain and abscess formation is due to the inability of the erupting teeth to find enough space in the mouth. In addition to pain, these teeth can cause deterioration in the jaw structure. Teeth that are not suitable for the jaw structure come out at the wrong angle and become embedded in the gingiva. Therefore they are not visible from the outside. Teeth that are not visible when viewed from the outside, that are horizontally protruding or that are half buried are detected in the x-ray. Impacted, semi-impacted or wisdom teeth that cause congestion in the jaw should be extracted because they can cause problems such as inflammation of the gum tissue, bad breath and tooth decay, and tissue loss in the roots and enamel of neighboring teeth. Impacted and semi-impacted teeth are removed by surgical tooth extraction. As with standard tooth extraction, surgical tooth extraction is performed under local anesthesia. Swelling may occur in the area after the operation. Applying ice to that area for around 24 hours after extraction will reduce the swelling.
